What is our program all about?
South Berwyn School District 100 recognizes and supports the development of children’s talents and abilities. The children we select have been identified as performing above grade level according to the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) on our benchmark assessments that are conducted in the fall.
As the accelerated learning coach I work with the classroom teachers to differentiate and enrich the children's academic program within the school day by providing services such as small group instruction, differentiated curriculum, cross-curricular applications, and challenge based learning projects. These children are also invited to participate in an after school or before school enrichment program which extends their learning beyond the school day. Many of the assignments and projects the students are working on during the day will extend into the after school program.

2018-2019
This is my first year having this position and working with this years group of students. We started off the year getting to know each other. I had the students take the Renzulli Profiler to identify what their academic strengths, interests, hobbies, and learning styles were. With this information, along with a discussion with the students, they decided they wanted to create a Magazine for Irving. They took pictures of the school, conducted interviews, wrote out a transcript... but they got stuck. They started creating their magazine on Google Slides, but I could tell the students were getting uninterested in it. I brought in our iCoach, Angela Gonzales, to help us with this loss of interest. She stated that our magazine sounded more like a book about Irving and introduced pages to the students. She transferred their work onto a template she created and their spark was back! We showed them that this e-book could be published to iTunes for anyone to see and they couldn't wait to work on it again.
The students continued to add to the e-book about Irving. The goal was to make sure we added information and heart into each page. They had to ask themselves; What is special about this grade? What is special about this person? How do they make our school a better place? With brainstorming and discussions they created a wonderful e-book that flowed and was aesthetically pleasing to the reader. Now we can share this e-book with incoming teachers, substitutes, and new students. You can download the e-book on iBooks titled: Inside Irving Elementary School.
