My passion
One of the main reasons I went to school to be an educator was to advocate for children with special needs. Growing up my neighbor, and best friend, was stung by a mosquito. This particular mosquito carried a disease, which caused her to have epilepsy. As she grew older more and more complications arose. Her seizures were becoming more prominent, her motor skills and speech slowed down. To me she was still my friend, same girl I played with when I was 6. But other kids didn't know her like I did, they did not see how amazing she was. She was so special, why didn't they see it? As a young student I decided to start reaching out to students in my class with special needs asking if they wanted to be friends. Following me through High School I had a few really good friends that I hold close to my heart.
Going into college, declaring my major in education and special education I knew I was on the right path. I joined Best Buddies in college and was the representative for Spread the Word to End the Word on campus. Challenging people to stop and think before they say harmful things to anyone was a really powerful thing. I met a lot of outstanding friends in Best Buddies that remind me why I love what I do.
Now, I am a teacher in a co-taught classroom. I get the honor of working with students with special needs everyday. I believe in pushing them to their greatest potential and challenging them like I would any other student. But, in a way that is tailored to their learning. These shining students continue to remind me why I love being an educator.
