I decided to take part in Slice of Life 2019 because of a conversation I had with a coworker. The conversation started off with different ways the students could create and present what they have learned in our Biography Writing Unit. I did not want to box them into writing another chapter book. I was pushing the idea to let them create whatever they want as long as it had the features of a biography. Features our students uncovered when exploring biographies:
My coworker agreed. As we continued our discussion we came to another conclusion: How can we expect our students to write or consider themselves writers, if we ourselves do not write? I have never considered myself to be a writer, so I think that a Slice of Life will be a great way to practice writing, discover challenges, and figure out the steps I took to became a writer that, in the end, I can share with my students. I hope you enjoy! Feel free to comment and share. #d100inspires #sol19

I decided to focus my website on the title “Lifting Learners”. A lot of my coworkers know that I have a love of weightlifting, eating clean, and living a well rounded, healthy lifestyle. My love of weightlifting is in my blood. My grandfather went to the 1952 Olympics for weightlifting and has been teaching me proper form, tips, and tricks since I was a child. He moved on to be the Strength Coach for the Chicago Bears. Weightlifting is not just about looking my best. I feel empowered when lifting. I feel strong. I love to progress I can visually see when my muscles grow. I love reaching a new PR (personal record). I push myself in ways many people can never say they have. I feel proud at the end of every workout. I am constantly learning new exercises and trying new things. The endorphins rushing through my body keep my mind on the positive side of everything in my life. Overall, it is my world, a complete lifestyle I choose to live. I make connections to my weightlifting a lot when I am teaching. When students are stuck, or trying to overcome a challenge I am constantly bringing up my past struggles with lifting. I am always learning new things even as an adult. They like that real, genuine connection I make to my own life. Weightlifting also relieves my stressors that come with teaching. It is my time to forget about anything & everything stressing me out in life and just LIFT. I am exhausted by the end of the day both physically and mentally, but I am ready for the day to come! ArchivesWhy start a website? Why start a blog? Why put myself out there to learn things that are out of my comfort zone? Inspiration. I am so lucky to be in a district that is full of people who inspire me to be a better person, leader and educator. My principal, Marty Stachura, has inspired me to dive into something that is completely out of my comfort zone... writing. A student of mine has inspired me to be a better writer for myself. He has pushed me to find different, unique ways to teach writing to all students. Irving's Literacy Coach, Courtney O'Connor, has inspired me to participate in a "Slice of Life" with her to become a better writer. My co-teacher, Rosemary Kusel, inspires me to be a better person everyday. My team inspires me with thoughts and ideas about our teaching. This forces us to reflect and adjust our teaching to our students learning. There are so many different ways Irving Elementary School and District 100 has inspired me to be the best I can. I am so thankful for that. I hope you follow my learning and enjoy! Archives |
